I'm an Ayurveda author, mindset coach and former corporate leader.
In 2012, I was a new mom in fast-paced San Francisco with a high touch, stressful, new job. I had a 3-hour daily commute, I was a new manager and my team's numbers were on the bottom. While trying to physically, energetically and mentally duct-tape all my life pieces together, I totally burnt out.
A snippet of my morning: After I dropped my daughter off at daycare, I had 2 minutes (Literally. Daycare opened at 8:00a, the bus came at 8:02a. Insane.) to catch the bus 3 blocks away. In ballet flats, computer bag on my shoulder, I sprinted (and prayed!) to the bus stop. If I missed that bus, I missed my morning meeting with my boss and other seasoned leaders, who were actually successful.Â
I felt like I only had a wee portion of my brain. I was tired and my energy fizzled out every day (more coffee, please!), I cried a lot, drank wine and worked 'til 11 at night. I prayed for some kind of change. I cried a lot (did I mention that?). And then like a God send, I remembered my Ayurveda teachings, "Ayurveda says, to change the mind, move your body."
So I empowered myself to make time my best ally and put myself FIRST, so I could do everything else.
I didn’t have a lot of time but I found 10 minutes. Then I made space for another 10 minutes.
After that 20 minutes everything flipped. I hacked the work-life balance struggle. And then my team grew to #1 *mmmwahahaha* (evil happy laugh, no more tears).
